“Heart Bursts Like Pomegranate”, acrylic on 18” x18'“ canvas, Rose Wintergreen, 2019

Group art show: "All You Can Eat", Brunswick Street Gallery

July 12, 2019 in exhibition, paintings on canvas

Join me in celebrating the opening of this group show I am a part of.

I have a juicy large painting in this, called "Heart Bursts Like Pomegranate", 18" x 18" on canvas, which will be available for purchase through the gallery.

About “Heart Bursts Like Pomegranate”

“Heart Bursts Like Pomegranate” (mixed media on 18” x 18” canvas) is a bittersweet ode to abundance and joy: coming home in the late afternoon, starving from forgetting to have lunch, sitting in the warmth of the last golden autumn sunlight and tearing into a plate full of pomegranates with bare hands.

The flavours are punctuated by the zing of mandarin morsels and a freeze-dried strawberry generously coated in white chocolate, a decadent surprise offering from a housemate. A warm, sweet-tart creamy dance of jewels and flesh, draped in golden light that could disappear at any moment and transform to a sad blue chill.

Completed outside over a week of afternoons in the last of the autumn sunlight, Wintergreen worked from three different variations of a still life of fruit to build and explore multiple layers of colour and meaning, eating whilst painting to stay connected to the flavours:

  • For the first variation, the fruit was whole, to capture the feeling of promise (painted with acrylic).

  • For the second, the fruit had been devoured and nothing was left except discarded skin and pith, to capture the messiness and impending grief of having eaten too much too quickly (drawn without looking at the canvas using paint marker).

  • The third was an arrangement freshly cut with a knife, to celebrate the pattern repeats of the jewels of the pomegranates (painted with acrylics and over drawn with water soluble pastels and paint markers).

Colours were chosen to portray the flavours and the sensation of textures in the mouth and on the hands and skin rather than as seen.
